Dead Ahead ,Bagshawe cavern
This year is definitely breakthrough year , after all we need something to brag about at the 60th . After a long unplanned break since July last year , we hope to get some regular sessions in .With 6 months of no caving the trip in was effortless ,without so much as a drop of sweat.
The dig was dry which was a bonus , but it soon became obvious that the heavily calcited boulders blocking the way on will need to be broken up . A job for next week .The view over the top is encouraging and the roof has plenty of features in it suggesting that we are heading in the right direction .
With hammers ,drills and batteries needed for next weeks session the trip in will be a joy (can't wait).

It has only taken about six years , but we finally set up a syphon to drain the passage at the start of the dig .
We should now be able to dig all year round with the minimum amount of faff.
Next week should see some real progress , and my first view of the air gap was very encouraging .
We will need to turn slightly left into the middle of the passage , but there is a definate way on now .

Horror filled my head as I arrived in the car park to the sight of Jon in shorts performing a series of stretches, luckily he had been for a run and wasn't preparing for some epic journey into the cavern.
We got to the dig (at a steady pace), pumped out the water, which was the same level as last week, and both took a shift at the end. Some progress was made, back next week.

Eager to crack on, I got to the dig armed with too much enthusiasm and splashed through the duck to commence digging, leaving Bog to pump. In hindsight a bad move as the pipe was disconnecting on a regular basis, pumping was abandoned in favour of kibble pulling, resulting in soaking spoil, lesson learnt. Progress in the dig was good, easy digging gaining good ground. Encouragingly a small gap has appeared between the fill and underside of calcite layer. Looking forwards to next weeks digging, after properly pumping first. Sadly we both left our go-pros at home so have no footage.

Dead ahead dig - 19.4.2016
Dave Cowley - Carl Bergmann
For some time now I have been conscious of making the most of our time at the dig . As the kids grow up time is at a premium. So after seeing a badgers dig and how organised it was it seemed like time to make a syphon for the sump (without any faff).I brought some pipe and fittings along, but at the last minute questioned if we had the right size, so we sacked the idea of carrying it in .Instead we took enough scaffolding in for the dig which consisted of two toothpicks and an onion ring .On arrival at the dig we found out that the pipe was the correct size , so I volunteered to pump as my forfeit. It feels like we made more progress last night than in the last two years put together and have a clear route ahead devoid of large tabs with sandy fill . The only disappointment was the lack of horses skulls and hats , but you can't have everything . The new kibbles worked great and we can't wait to get in next week and crack on. Dave's turn to post next week , so we should have comma's and full stops in the correct place .(no pressure)
